Are extensions right for me?
Just about anyone can get extensions! They're great if you want to add some length or even just some fullness. They are not, however, a low maintenence decision. Please read the Hair Extension Rules further down the page.
Will extensions ruin my hair?
No! With regular maintenance, you can wear extensions for years without adverse effects. As long as they are put in well and you do your part to care for them (washing appropriately, getting them tightened every 2-3 months) your extensions will be as good to you as you are to them.
How long do they last?
6-12 weeks between tightenings. After you first have them installed, it is best to make your first tightening appointment for a month out so that your stylist can see how fast your hair grows and how well you're taking care of them so you can then work together to come up with a tightening schedule.
Will they cause breakage?
No, it won't cause breakage. All of the lost hair when you take them out is your hairs daily shedding – everyone loses between 100-200 hairs a day, and when they're stuck in extensions they're not falling out. You will need to take care of your extensions very carefully however to avoid dreading (regular maintenance helps with this.) Synthetic hair can not be flat ironed – it's straight anyhow, and that much heat will melt the hair. You can, however, blowdry it on low heat, and you can use hot rollers.
Can I color my hair?
YOU can't color your hair, but your stylist can! Your natural hair can be colored with a single all over color process, and your roots can be touched up at the same appointment as your tightenings. You should not color extension hair – if you are changing your hair color, you'll need to buy all new extension hair. Synthetic hair can not be colored.
Can I get them "just in the back" or "underneath?"
No. Extensions must be a whole head to look natural, and you will need at least four rows to be adding length. If just thickness is being added, the pieces will be placed in the appropriate areas to give fullness. Just a fill-in is less expensive, but it adds no length.
If you just want to get colored synthetic "Special Effect" pieces, however, they can be placed where needed.
Where do you get the hair?
We get our hair from a professional supplier. The hair mostly comes from countries like India, China, and Korea.
How much hair will my head need?
It really varies from person to person, but on average it will take 2-3 bundles of human hair for a full head of pinchbraid extensions. If you are just having thickness added, one bundle should be enough.
How much do you charge?
The first time that your extensions are installed, you will pay the base price (minus the deposit paid when your appointment was made. Hair will also be paid for at time of booking). Depending on how much hair you have and what needs to be done with it, the base price will vary from person to person. Tightening cost is by the hour. See below for base price:

What is the difference between Human Hair and Synthetic?
Human hair can be styled with your own hair, you can curl it, flat iron it, use your regular hair products in it. Synthetic hair is made of synthetic materials and cannot be styled on high heat - you can blowdry it on low heat, however. We usually use synthetic hair for Special Effects pieces for special events or for synthetic dreadlock extensions.
Should I get a weave or pinchbraids?
A weave will only look good on hair that is already collarbone length or longer – even then you can't part the hair anywhere but on top – so that limits a lot of styling options. Pinchbraids can be done on hair as short as 3-4 inches and can be styled any way but in a supersmooth ponytail.
Why does blonde hair cost more than dark hair?
Most extension hair comes from eastern eurpean countries, where people have darker hair naturally, and it is much more work to keep the hair in good condition and make it lighter.
If you have any other questions or are considering getting extensions, call us to book a complimentary consultation. If after your consultation you decide to book an appointment, expect to pay a $100 non-refundable deposit plus cost of hair (varies) to hold your spot and order your hair. Exact costs will be discussed during consultation, as they vary from person to person depending on what you need.
What you can expect after having hair extensions put in:
-
A few nights of having a tender head is normal.
-
Itchiness in the first few weeks is normal.
-
Your stylist will recommend shampoo & styling products.
-
Never color your extension hair. It is so processed by the time we receive it that you can never determine what color will be the end result.
-
Never get your extensions cut at another salon. They require a special cutting technique.
Washing Your Hair:
-
Always stand in the shower. NEVER tip head under faucet.
-
Massage scalp gently with fingertips. Do not rub hair vigorously.
-
Rinse hair very thoroughly. (Important!)
-
Never use high water pressure.
-
Shampoo hair 1-2 times a week MAXIMUM.
-
You may use a spray bottle with a mixture of water and CHI Silk Infusion as a leave-in conditioner and lightly mist the hair.
Conditioning:
-
Always use your stylist recommended moisturizing conditioner. DO NOT USE CONDITIONER FOR FINE HAIR.
-
Apply conditioner to extensions only. Do not apply on braids near scalp; this could cause the extensions to slip.
Combing out your extensions:
-
Comb daily row by row.
-
Gently start coming from the ends and work your way up to where the hair is attached
-
Use a wide tooth comb or a paddle brush.
-
After pinch braids have been in about a month, you will want to start pulling them apart from each other at the scalp to avoid dreading or tangling.
Nighttime:
-
Wear your hair in a loose braid or pull on top of your head in a loose ponytail
NEVER GO TO BED WITH WET HAIR!!! We can not stress this enough!!!
Daily Wear:
-
Always make sure that hair is completely dry when wearing ponytails or braids.
-
Always braid hair when high wind is a factor such as when motorcycling, convertibles, sky diving, etc.
-
Remember to braid hair when swimming and comb out as soon as finished. Chlorine can turn blondes green and is damaging to all hair.
Tangles:
-
If any tangling occurs, call us immediately.
-
It is best not to go to another salon for detangling or shampooing because many salons do not know how to work with hair extensions.
-
We charge $50 an hour for detangling.
Miscellaneous:
-
These rules are for YOUR protection!
-
Hair extensions are not an exact science. Each bundle of hair is different and may act and react differently than your previous bundle. Due to this, Derby Salon cannot guarantee the quality of your human hair.
-
We will keep your leftover hair in a file with your name on it as long as you come in for regular maintenance. If no maintenance has been done within a year since your last maintenance appointment, you forfeit your hair unless special arrangements have been made.
-
If you have any problems or questions, please call your stylist and they will return your call as soon as they can. There are no refunds of money on hair or services. Derby Salon will do all they can to help with any problems that may occur within the first two weeks.
