What are dreadlocks?
Dreadlocks are simply a collection of shed hair that is entangled into the hair attached to your scalp. They are not dirty - as long as you maintain proper hygeine, there is no reason that they would be a problem. They look as good as the amount of work that you put into them - you can always tell who takes proper care of their dreads vs. who doesn't.
Can I wash my dreadlocks?
No more than once a month for the first year - you need the oil and shed hair to build up to give the dread firmness, otherwise you risk them unraveling.
How can I prevent itchiness and scalp buildup?
Use Bumble & bumble's Tonic Lotion or Knotty Boy Cooling Spray daily.
Do I have to shave my head to get rid of my dreads?
Dreadperm: If you want to get rid of them right away, yes. This is a PERMENANT PROCEDURE. If you keep your dreads for at least a year, you should be able to cut them out and still have 3-4 inches of your own hair. It will be short, but you don't have to shave it at that point.
Natural dreads: It is possible to detangle them, with a lot of time, detangler, combs, and ibuprofen.
Can I dye my dreads?
It's not recommended for you to do it yourself, but your stylist can! Wait a few months after the dreadperm is done.
How do I maintain my new dreads?
Dreads look as good as the time and effort you put into them. It's recommended to roll your dreads weekly with Knotty Boy tightening gel, and once a month you can soak them in water with sea salt to help them tighten up. The gel is recommended for baby dreads, don't use the wax until you have very well developed dreadlocks, as it will hinder the maturing process. It is also important to come in every two months for the first year for maintenance – that way your stylist can check on them, keep them separated, and direct you on how to take care of them if something different needs to be done.
How long does my hair have to be to have a dreadperm?
At least four inches long, but remember, they're going to shrink a little bit. At least shoulder length is recommended, but not required.
Will the curliness from the dreadperm go away?
Yes! With regular rolling, the curliness left by the dreadperm should straighten out in 2-3 months.
How do dread extensions work?
Dread extensions are dreadlocks formed with synthetic hair that are braided into your own natural or dreaded hair (they are also great for starting natural dreads!) They are a great alternative if you want to try dreads without making any commitments. The care for these is the same as with regular dreads, except you don't use any product on them. They will need to be tightened every 2-3 months unless you intend on using them to form natural dreadlocks.
